Macca Aims For Features

What excellent news... A feature-length animated film based on a Paul McCartney children's book is coming!

Reported by Variety today, the film is based on his 2005 book High in the Clouds (which was also written by Geoff Dunbar and Philip Ardagh). It's about a squirrel who searches for animal sanctuary Anamalia after his home is turned into an urban nightmare. McCartney will be composing many news songs for it, Disney veteran Tony Bancroft (Mulan) will direct it, and Shrek Forever After scribe Josh Klausner will pen the screenplay. The film is going to be computer animated, and it's expected to come out in 2015.

McCartney himself said...

High in the Clouds is a passion project for me. I am thrilled to be working in partnership with Randa Ayoubi and David Corbett at RGH, and David Michael Lynne and Bob Shaye of Unique Features. Working with the highly creative talent at these companies together with Josh Klausner and Tony Bancroft, we will be able to create a warm, funny and moving animated film that will resonate with worldwide audiences.”

Three words...

Color... Me... Excited...

It seems like 2015 is going to deliver a diverse palette of animated features - from this to Aardman's Shaun the Sheep to Sony's Ratchet and Clank - to go against the usual stuff and fluff. I'm glad that it's coming so soon, and that it's already going full steam ahead. It'll be great to see an animated feature written by Paul with music by Paul. It's going to be fantastic, and Paul is no stranger to animation. He's tackled the medium many times in his post-Beatles career. Many of the results are quite interesting and worth looking at.

For your viewing pleasure... Two eclectic examples of Paul's past animation work...

What's your take on an animated film based on a book by Paul McCartney featuring new songs by the man himself?

More Stupid Rebooting

Disney has announced that a live action "origin" film about Cruella de Vil is in the works... You read that right, a live action origin film about the evil, vain, puppy-murdering villainess from One Hundred and One Dalmatians...

Yes, it was reported by /Film today and quite frankly, I don't care who is writing it, who is going to be in the cast, yadda yadda yadda. This is a foolish idea, and one that tells me that Disney has no faith in their live action studio after the failures of Prince of Persia, John Carter and The Lone Ranger. It doesn't help that Marvel and Lucasfilm are going to be the ones supplying them with live action hits and big franchises... And Bob Iger loves those franchises...

Look, it's not right to pre-judge it, but the problems I have with this project are the same ones I have with the upcoming Maleficent.

First of all, why does Disney feel the need to take the stories they adapted into their animated classics and re-imagine them as darker, grittier live-action films? To get teens into the theater? To cash-in on the already beloved classics? Why? Alice in Wonderland was huge for many reasons, it looked great, it was the first major 3D film after Avatar and the marketing made it look like something that made everyone say "I gotta go see that!" Oz did well because the original is beloved, and people went to see the new take on it out of curiosity. The marketing was good, too.

Soon, this rebooting fairy tales/family-friendly stories trend will come to an end. Alice in Wonderland's massive success was lightning in a bottle, as Oz couldn't recapture it neither could non-Disney fairy tale reboots like Snow White and the Huntsman and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Maleficent probably won't set the box office on fire next summer, at best it'll perform like Oz. I'll be very surprised if it does much better than that film did.

But this rebooting fairy tales thing and the whole reaction to The Lone Ranger's box office performance makes me worry about the Walt Disney Studios. Now, not every live action release from the company over sixty years has been great, but at least there were different stories to be told. Walt Disney himself, not being too fond of sequels, usually opted for something different with many of his live action films, whether it was a period piece or a good old-fashioned family adventure or a zany goofball comedy or even a drama. Even during the 1970s and 1980s, at least they weren't trying to reboot the animated films as live action films, despite gravitating towards Herbie sequels and madcap comedies like the 1960s ones.

Now the plan is to explores stories that have already been told. I could care less for the Maleficent film because I don't need an origin story that paints the mistress of all evil as a sympathetic figure, plus she's a terrible villain, why have any shred of sympathy for that? Same goes for Cruella. Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella? Walt Disney was able to tell the story of Cinderella with all the drama and heart in less than 75 minutes, will this new film add another 50 minutes of pointless exposition, medieval violence and back story stuff? Will it include the violence that Walt Disney didn't opt to put in the original film? Because, you know, Disney's animated fairy tale adaptations suck because they aren't violent or gory like the original fairy tales. Right? Right?!

The Jungle Book? Disney already did a decent live action adaptation that was closer to Rudyard Kipling's original story than Walt's bizarrely-flawed but enjoyable animated film. Pete's Dragon? As if that 1977 family-friendly musical needed a remake that doesn't have (gasp) songs. The Rocketeer? Can we please leave an already good cult classic alone? Why not just give the original some kind of big re-release and do a sequel to it instead, like you did with TRON: Legacy? Flight of the Navigator? Again... Why not just introduce newer generations to the damn original, instead making a new film?

If anything, it seems like Walt Disney Studios will only be specializing in two things: Small-scale live action fare... And blockbuster re-imaginings of stories that they have already covered. I guess we won't be seeing the likes of The Stuff of Legend or Matched or Terra Incognita and the other fresh projects that Alan Horn happened to green light last year.

It baffles me that executives aren't figuring out why John Carter and The Lone Ranger, instead they assume that they should just drop that kind of approach to live action tentpoles and just be very, very safe. So you'll let Marvel and Lucasfilm go all out because they can, but you won't at least try something new for your own studio? Touchstone is doing okay with their small-scale stuff, as Disney should do well with that stuff too. (The Odd Life of Timothy Green, for example, was a profitable success.)

There is some hope. Brad Bird's Tomorrowland could very well blow the likes of Oz and Maleficent out of the water, while also being the success that John Carter and The Lone Ranger weren't. What if this thing is an all-out blockbuster that makes more than just a big profit? In 2014, they've also got Into The Woods, which is at least something they haven't done before - regardless of how it turns out! I'll be more than happy if those two films outdo Maleficent and show the suits that people want fresh, new live action fare from Disney. John Carter and The Lone Ranger? We all know why those two films flopped, so Disney should not assume that audiences don't want something fresh and new.

I mean... Pirates of the Caribbean, anyone?

Big risk. Paid off. Started a big multi-billion dollar franchise...

Oh, and the first was put into production when pirate films were considered box office poison. Oh, and it was a PG-13 Disney release. Not a Touchstone one.

Sometimes people want something fresh, new and even risky. They just have to go about it the right way. Disney didn't for John Carter, which could've very well launched a trilogy and subsequent franchise. They also screwed up with The Lone Ranger, and they're ignorantly showing TRON the door despite the fanbase and the newly-acquired fans brought on by the 2010 sequel... Meanwhile, they pour the marketing love into Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm's releases... Oh, and Walt Disney Animation Studios' films to a lesser extent.

I think the ambitious Pirates of the Caribbean should more than be a great lesson for the current Disney brass...

A Relaunch for Adult Animation?

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's upcoming animated comedy Sausage Party can bring a lot of things to the table. The American animation industry both needs it and kind of doesn't it...

This is the first wide-release R-rated animated film since South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was released in 1999. It's a wide-release adult-oriented animated film. Period. We need much more of those. It seems like it'll be funny, given the duo's other films, especially the wickedly hilarious This Is The End.

In addition to the talent behind it and the lower budget they're shooting for, this looks to be something of a send-up of Pixar films. I mean, it's about a talking sausage (and talking food) searching for the meaning of his existence. It's like that line from American Dad!, mentioning a Pixar film called "Clothes" featuring John Ratzenberger as a tie!

And also, Pixar's "what if" approach to stories is in need of a good parody. Shrek is definitely a riff on Disney's classic animated films of the fairy tale variety, though it's also a bitter "**** you" to the company and their legacy from Jeffrey Katzenberg that tends to miss the mark. A good parody of the films from a fine studio would be welcome, and Pixar's filmography is ripe for one. Though it's possible that one day, Pixar will spoof themselves. After all, Disney did it with The Emperor's New Groove almost thirteen years ago.

So getting a potentially good R-rated animated film - a strange and bizarre one at that - so soon is a good thing, right? It's just what we need for the American feature animation industry, right?

Well, like I said earlier, a few problems may rise from this...

What kind of adult-oriented animation does well in North America?

Stuff like Seth MacFarlane's shows, stuff on Adult Swim, Fox's current ADHD block, and South Park. Over the years, failed "adult animation" blocks on other channels (Spike's CFFA immediately comes to mind - back when they were called Spike TV) showcased the same kind of animation: Raunchy, definitely not so suitable for children, and loaded with stuff that makes preteens say "Oh my god! That's sooooooo adult!" It's been a thing since the success of Family GuySouth Park and Adult Swim. From 2000 to now, most adult-oriented animated television shows follow this mold.

Now let's look at some wide-release adult-oriented animated films, Simpsons Movie excluded...

9? Not a good film to begin with despite the great art direction and style, and one that was marketed to teenagers in such a wretched marketing campaign. It failed for a good reason... Rango and Fantastic Mr. Fox? Brilliant. We need more of those. Fortunately, the former was backed by effective marketing and made some dough at the box office. Other than that? Not much. If adult-oriented animation can thrive on television, then it could very well be a viable thing in the world of theatrical animated features.  It's about time that someone is at least trying to create a market for this kind of animation at the moment...

But if this film is a big hit, what will it tell executives?

"More raunchy adult-oriented animation!"

No, they won't be saying, "Let's invest in smart adult-oriented animation now that there's a market for adult animation." They'll be saying, "Let's make more raunchy stuff!" You won't be seeing anything resembling Studio Ghibli films or something like The Triplets of Belleville produced by an American animation studio any time soon. Heck, we don't really get that kind of stuff on television, we're not going to get it in theaters anytime soon.

Now that's not to say that some of the stuff out there isn't experimental. I was once a big fan of Adult Swim when they were airing an eclectic batch of shows. Nowadays, they don't really do that in my eyes... But there was a time when Adult Swim was home to a wide variety of different animated programs despite all of them using raunchy humor or shock-value violence. Some fine examples, to me, would be Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021The Venture Brothers, Robot ChickenMetalocalypse and Superjail! Stylistically, not all of these shows were the same. Thematically? Only a few were similar, mostly the William Street riffs on Hanna-Barbera stuff (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, The Brak Show). Despite excessive gore, Metalocalypse and Superjail! aren't the same exact show while Robot Chicken is no Venture Brothers. Get what I am getting at, here?

Fox's ADHD block moves on from the Seth MacFarlane/dysfunctional family formula with shows like Axe Cop and whatnot. This is also good, as it'll show that adult-oriented animation doesn't have to be limited to screwed up sitcoms about crazy families.

But...

Adult-oriented animation is so much more than what you see on Fox, ADHD, Adult Swim, FX or Comedy Central... Just look at what's made in Europe and Japan. More of that in America, please! History repeats itself, as in the 1970s, Ralph Bakshi's works motivated people to invest in shock-value adult animated films. The animation world saw a lot of crumby knock-offs in the 1970s and 1980s, lots of films that try so hard to be a successful, but they didn't have what made Bakshi's films work.

Sausage Party will either open up a door for the American animation industry and show the bigwigs that there is a market for adult animation, thus people will seize different opportunities... Or it will only ensure the growth of raunchy, mostly immature "adult" animation with nothing smart to come out of any pore.

What do you think will happen?

Audiences Eat "Cloudy 2" Up

So movie press, is there an "animation curse"? Are audiences getting tired of animated feature films? Nope... Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 did well - as expected - over the weekend...

Taking in an estimated $35 million, this start was $2 million higher than the adjusted opening weekend total of the first film. It didn't decrease from the original like some animated sequels tend to do, but it didn't make a whole lot more either (I had predicted somewhere around $45 million).

It has all of October to itself to grow legs and gross over $100 million domestically - the first animated film since Despicable Me 2 to do so. Of course, we all know that Turbo, The Smurfs 2 and Planes missed that threshold for multiple reasons. Of course, our press bends over backwards and just assumes that there's a glut of animated features, or that audiences are tired of animation and that it's becoming box office poison. Of course, they probably never really considered animation to be anything more than kids stuff so they wouldn't know...

Anyways, it's a decent opening and the film will make back that $78 million budget in no time. Win-win for Sony, win-win for the American animation industry at the box office and win-win for those who saw it and enjoyed it.

I just find it surprising that it couldn't outgross non-sequel Hotel Transylvania's opening weekend take. That film keeps the crown for biggest September opening, I was thinking that this would easily beat that. Regardless, $35 million is still a solid start for this film.

Update: The actual gross is $34 million. Still solid...

Prayer Cards

I think I mentioned it a few weeks back, but John will complete the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion over the next eight months!  He will need to be able to say the Lord’s Prayer, Glory Be and Hail Mary by himself to the priest.  We don’t want him to be so nervous about just remembering the words that he can’t appreciate the real meaning of the sacraments.  Soooo… I made him these prayer cards to practice on his own when he has a few minutes at home or in the car or just wherever.

September 2013 104

September 2013 105

I used a different color card for each prayer and also included the words for making the sign of the cross.  I broke each prayer up on to a few different cards so that he can try to say a phrase without looking and then flip the card to check his work or give him a prompt.  After they were all written, I just punched a hole in the top of each one and attached them with a binder ring.  I studied with flash cards from elementary school right through grad school so this was kind of second nature for me.  Of course, we will continue say his prayers together as a family at bedtime… and I’m hoping the baby will know these rote by the time he’s in second grade… but some independent study can’t hurt.

Twenty Years

Honey’s twenty-year high school reunion was last weekend.  He has stayed pretty darn close to the lot of his main high school crew.  They are a fun group, full of big personalities and loads of crazy stories of growing up together from pre-school on.  Soooo, I’m not sure why I was surprised when the bus “Savy” organized for our ride downtown ended up looking like this…

photo 3 (6)

Yep.  That went down.  We arrived at the party in the Tattletale bus.  No, we didn’t go to Tattletale.  And no, there weren’t any strippers on the bus.  But yes, it was rather perfumed (for lack of a better word).  And YES, it was hysterical.

The Saturday night event was at Monday Night Brewing – a local craft brewery that grew out of a small Atlanta Bible study.  They have a fun philosophy and a unique venue.

I knew more people than I expected to know, especially outside of Honey’s little group.  We had a great night dancing, dining, cocktailing and catching up (as evidenced by our requisite stint in the photo booth) .

Just for kicks, this is what that group looked like back in ninety-three.  Honey’s on the end in the plaid ensemble with the strange partially shaved head (although I'm guessing it wasn't so strange back then seeing as they all have the same do.)

It only took us about four days to recover from staying out into all hours of the night two nights in a row.  Some things have changed in twenty years.

Oscar Facelift

The rules of the Best Animated Feature category are going to be changed...

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today: More people will be able to serve the Animated Feature Film Award Screening Committee. Why is that?

Screeners.

These people will now be able to watch all of the potential nominees for Best Animated Feature thanks to the discs. Ergo, it won't seem like the winner took home the award without a challenge. Prior to this, the committee had to attend the nominees in November, as special screenings were held on Sundays... And did all of them go? Of course not! They are now required to view the screeners, thankfully. Again, with much more voters, we may see some diversity. A big studio might not even take home the award next year!

Now if anything, I see this as a response to the previous animated feature Oscar win...

Brave winning - beating out Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman no less! - more than caused a backlash. It seemed likely that Pixar's fairy tale film won because everything was rigged, or because no one in the branch even saw Wreck-It Ralph or ParaNorman. Well, now these people will be able to see those films and we'll see a much more balanced ceremony this coming February. I hope...

As for my Oscar nomination predictions? Well, here's my rough guess for now. (5 slots)

The Croods
Ernest and Celestine
Frozen
Monsters University
The Wind Rises

We should be hearing about the nominees in a couple months... What do you think of this change to the category's rules?

Rising Again?

DreamWorks might want their ill-fated, ambitious animated feature Rise of the Guardians to make its money back somehow...

A new Blu-ray edition is hitting shelves on November 5th, with cover artwork that plays up the Christmas angle of the film.

Fortunately for DreamWorks, they were able to release this film on Blu-ray earlier in the year because it's not truly a Christmas film (unlike something like The Polar Express, which they waited a year after its theatrical release to put out on DVD for obvious reasons) and it actually takes place around Easter. But since Santa Claus and Jack Frost are in it, this release was inevitable. I had actually thought way back when that DreamWorks could re-release this film on Blu-ray with different packaging for a Christmas release, and perhaps a Halloween release focusing on Pitch. (Probably a no-go since Pitch was the villain and he supposedly scared many kids.)

Like the original Blu-ray cover, this doesn't present our childhood heroes as badasses. The more they promote it as cutesy fluff, the more people will scoop it up. Unfortunately, in America, you have to market animation as cutesy or comedic. Just look at Frozen's new trailer...

Anyways, this might help the film get more fans and hopefully those who didn't see it get to check it out. Will it put the film in the black? Probably not... That'll probably take a while, though I heard that the DVD and Blu-ray sales have been good for this one. Long live Rise of the Guardians!

More From the Animated Birds

More stuff on Free Birds and Rio 2...

The theatrical trailer for Turkeys... I mean, um... Free Birds, arrived yesterday alongside Frozen's trailer...

While I'm looking forward to this film, I think this trailer is just another typical animated film trailer that doesn't make the film look that good. In fact, I think the first trailer is much better in terms of the editing and structure. Also, the "Hold Onto Your Nuggets" tagline? Please...

Oh well, that's typical animation marketing. I have a feeling that this film will surprise me in some way. What do you think of the trailer? Are you looking forward to this film? Or not?

USA also gave us a first look at Rio 2 earlier this week...

From the images and plot details, it sounds decent. There's probably going to be lots of wacky comedy and whatnot (expected from a Blue Sky film), and probably lots of pop music to go with the samba. Also, the daughter having an iPod (pictured above) only reminds me of the iPod's prominence in the studio's previous feature, Epic.

Anyways, it's great that they aren't completely rehashing the first film, which I did enjoy very much. I like the idea of more macaws and Nigel returning, he was one of the best things about the first film if you ask me. I'm not exactly sure if I'm looking forward to this sequel or not, given that 2014 has us animation fanatics spoiled with the likes of How To Train Your Dragon 2The BoxTrolls, Book of Life, Big Hero 6. I guess if this was coming out this year, I'd be anticipating it more.

I'm just getting tired of the American animation marketplace being saturated with goofy family-friendly comedies, but Rio was one done right and maybe the sequel will be the same. What do you think?

Melted

Well here it is folks, the theatrical trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen...

And to be honest, it's not that bad of a trailer... Okay, it isn't perfect, not even great by any means... But it does its job, audiences will go see it because it essentially looks like "Tangled Mach II". It's the typical animated film trailer: Frenetic, joke-centric and it probably doesn't give you a feel of what the film will ultimately be like. But at least there's some pretty animation to gaze at here, and there are some moments that generate excitement.

This will probably be the only time I'll watch it, but here it is... Enjoy!

I Love {Southern Homes & Gardens}

I was recently introduced to Southern Homes & Gardens and just can’t say enough good things about their gorgeous and so-Southern decor, accessories and gifts.  When they offered to send me the preserved boxwood wreath I’d been head-over-heels for, I jumped at the chance.  *squeals with delight*

I have big plans for this beaut – I’m thinking topped with a luxurious satin ribbon at the holidays and perhaps paired with burlap for my front portico in the Spring.  But for now, I used a large clear suction cup to hang her atop my antique foyer mirror.  With the leaves already falling from the trees, I can’t help but smile every time I see this lovely piece of green.

For what it’s worth, this is one of the best made preserved boxwood wreaths I’ve seen.  It’s full, bright, ready to hang and LUSH… the thing is heavy!

While I was at it, I went ahead and updated my DIY oyster shell frame with a snap from our latest family photo session (thanks Kristin Leigh!).
