Ghost Hot Chocolate

This one is an oldie but a goodie.  Temperatures here in Georgia dipped down to freezing last week and our Halloween Witch surprised the littles with ghost hot chocolate for an after school treat.  After making the hot chocolate, I float a peep on top of a regular marshmallow to hold it up.  And in about two minutes, your little ghouls will be screaming with delight!  (I found the peeps at Target this year.)

On an unrelated note, I popped in the Lilly store with fellow LP lover M Saturday and we were delighted to find a spread of treats and cider.  Hello, lovely Lilly pumpkin!  I wanted to take you home with me.  You know, to offset Captain Underpants in my Halloween display.

And since this post is already a bit schiz, I had to share my sweet Iron Patriot hanging with Big Joe.  He’s growing on me.  (The monkey, not the kid.  He stole my heart eight years ago.)

Oh lord, since I’m sharing, check out precious CeeCee in two of her weekend looks.  Cutest baby girl ever.

Now, I've somehow lost the roll of teal grass cloth I used on my living room bookcases and I'm desperate to find it.  I'll be saying non-stop novenas to St. Anthony today.  WHERE OH WHERE COULD I HAVE HIDDEN A ROLL OF WALLPAPER???????  I searched all weekend to no avail :-(

Oookay then… how’s that for a bunch of randomness to start your week!?!?

Figuring Fox's Animation Slate Out

In an attempt to fire back at a very confident Disney, who announced a giant upcoming animation slate that ended in fall 2018, 20th Century Fox grabbed dates for animated films from DreamWorks, Blue Sky and Fox Animation. Their slate capped off a month after Disney's...

Disney's slate consisted of four (wisely) untitled Walt Disney Animation Studios project. Two of which will hit theaters in spring and autumn 2016 respectively, the next two will be released in spring and autumn 2018 respectively. The other four films on Disney's animation slate were untitled Pixar films; one slated for summer 2016, another for summer 2017, one for fall 2017 and the last one for summer 2018. All of the projects were "untitled".

DreamWorks' animation slate, at the time, concluded in November 2016 with Trolls. Nothing was set in stone for 2017 or 2018 just yet, though Blue Sky Studios shocked some by announcing a spring 2017 release date for their upcoming Ferdinand. At the same time, they unveiled that their 2016 release would be Fox Animation's long-gestating Anubis. The film is now a co-production between Blue Sky and Fox Animation. Fox Animation is basically the revived animation wing that 20th Century Fox shut down in 2000 after Don Bluth's Titan A.E. bombed at the box office, now they're doing various projects. Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox was one of them...

Shortly after Disney announced their full upcoming animation slate, Fox then announced theirs... The following dates were...

March 10, 2017
June 16, 2017
July 21, 2017
November 3, 2017
December 20, 2017
March 23, 2018
June 29, 2018
July 20, 2018
November 2, 2018
December 21, 2018

Next to each was "Untitled Fox/DWA/Blue Sky"...

Also notice that there's 5 releases set for 2017 and 2018...

DreamWorks releases three films a year maximum, and they'll begin doing that regularly starting next year. Their plan is to lower the budgets on their films, especially after how badly Rise and the Guardians and Turbo both did at the box office. I honestly can't see DreamWorks releasing four films in a calendar year; too much workload, it could affect quality and also... It almost happened, but didn't.

So that leaves Blue Sky and Fox Animation, assuming that "Untitled Fox" means " Untitled Fox Animation Studios Film", and they've got a few projects on the docket.

Fox Animation is currently working on The Book of Life with Reel FX Creative Studios, that'll be released next October. After that, they'll collaborate with Blue Sky to bring Anubis to the screen in 2016. Three other animated films are in the works there: Welcome to the Jungle, Mr. Men and King Kong...

It's possible that one of these three untitled projects will be co-productions with either Blue Sky or Reel FX. If things go well with The Book of Life, then Reel FX and Fox Animation may collaborate again.

Also, we have no idea whether Fox is including films like Alvin and the Chipmunks sequels on this slate or not, the day the slate was unveiled, they did announce that the fourth film in that series (ugh) was slated for a December 2015 release. Do they consider those films animated films? Or hybrids at least? Or not? If they do, then the December 2017 or December 2018 release could be another Chipmunks film, as much as we don't want it to be.

That being said, since there's 5 slots, Blue Sky may have to ramp up their schedule a bit. Two films a year could very well be their game plan. I will admit, I do give them props for taking their time on films, as they release one film almost every calendar year. (Averted in 2010.) But that may change...

But as I learned over the last couple of months, nothing really is seemingly set in stone. Dates constantly change, and sometimes unthinkable release dates are picked for animated films. Who would've thought that Disney would pick the now-lucrative March spot for a Walt Disney Animation Studios film after years of usually picking summer or pre-Thanksgiving November? They haven't touched the spring spots since 2004! DreamWorks shuffles films on their slate constantly, so we may see a big change with the 2015-2016 section in the coming months.

Who knows... But one thing's for certain, Blue Sky might have to get two films out a year. Either that, or Fox Animation will have to really step up and make more films than they usually do...

Either way, it's big doins' for Fox, animation and all of the studios that make the films for them to distribute...

Mickey Tie Dye

As promised, I’m finally back with the ins and outs of making your very own Mickey tie dye!  I used the Disney Dreamer Designs tutorial for my shirts and don’t want to steal her thunder so this isn’t a complete tutorial.  Rather, I am just sharing what I did differently to save a little time and correct my errors.

Supplies: You’ll need all cotton prewashed shirts that were dried without any fabric softeners, tulip dye, waxed dental floss, needle, Mickey outlines, rubber bands, garbage bags, bleach pen, vinegar.

September 2013 219

1. Follow the Disney Dreamer instructions all the way through putting the rubber band on after pulling the dental floss strings.

September 2013 221

September 2013 222

2. I skipped the soda ash soaking steps because the Tulip dye said this wasn’t necessary.

3. Twist and rubber band your shirts per the Disney Dreamer instructions.
 September 2013 224

4. Dye your shirts using the Disney Dreamer instructions.  Be sure to follow them explicitly.

5. Let the shirts sit over night wrapped tightly in small garbage bags.

6. Unwrap the shirts and pull the rubber bands off.

7.  At this point I was sad to see that I didn’t have a clear Mickey outline.  I used a bleach pen and drew right on top of the dental floss.  It was pulled out in some places so I just estimated.  I let them sit on the side of my tub for about an hour and then gently pulled the floss totally out.  I carefully put them in the washer so as to not bleach anything unintended.

8. Wash the shirts on cold with a cup of vinegar in addition to the detergent.  Mother said this helps set the dye.

The baby helped me with the dye part and we really had a lot of fun.  The rest of it was awfully tedious, but worth it in the end!!

Many thanks to Disney Dreamer for the great tutorial!!

Science Fair: Carbonation + Mentos Explosion

Well now, it’s no secret that Honey and I are card carrying graduates of Georgia’s nerdiest college.  And by now y’all know how we get all kinds of crazy excited about all things math and science.  So, it should be no surprise that we were thrilled when the PCP shared is idea for participation in his third science fair!!  It’s totally optional and parental involvement is obviously necessary at this level.  But, he came up with the idea, he executed the project and then…  well… let’s just say he kinda fell off the wagon when it came time to put together the display so Mommy had to bribe and cajole him into submission over the course of a few last minute and utterly terrible hours before it was due (we are making charts at 4pm for a project due at 6pm.  UGH!)  I suppose the fact that we got back from Disney at 1am and got up for school five hours later had something to do with it.  All tantrums aside, you know the old saying “all is well that ends well”?   Well, it couldn’t be truer in this case.  This, my friends, is the face of the FIRST PLACE Science Fair Winner!!!!!!!!!!

Hypothesis:
More carbonation in a drink will make a bigger Mentos explosion.  (What is it with boys and explosions?!?!)

How to find out how much carbon dioxide is in each drink:
1.Quickly take the top off a drink.
2.Put a balloon over the opening.
3.Hold the balloon in place and shake up the drink.
4.Keep doing it until it blows up the balloon.
5.Measure how big around each balloon is. (Diet Coke won!)

How to make a Mentos explosion:
1.Quickly take the top off a drink.
2.Drop in a Mentos.
3.Watch the explosion.  Diet Coke had the tallest and longest explosion!  We recorded it on video and then took clips of it at it’s peak for the pictures.
4.Pour the left over drink in a measuring cup to see how much is left. The one that has the least amount left lost the most drink and had the BIGGEST explosion!

Conclusion:
When I found out that Diet Coke had the most carbonation, I thought it would have the biggest explosion when I put in the Mentos.  I was right!More carbonation in a drink does make a BIGGER Mentos explosion!

We’re super proud of the kid!  Yet, I’m already slightly freaking out at the thought of having to pull of TWO of these next year when the baby hits school :-)

Poster Puzzle

Is this our first teaser poster for Pixar's The Good Dinosaur?

I'm going to say no. It would be weird for Pixar to release one this early, because the film is not even due out for another two years. Sure, Arlo and Spot's designs are very close to what we've seen in the concept artwork... But look at the way the title is integrated into everything, also all those jungle leaves and the sky background just seem like they were thrown in there. Something about it just seems fan-made, something like those Frozen posters where someone got the designs (or the prototype/near-finished designs) and built their own posters around them.

But I could be wrong, after all this could've been a teaser poster (or an early version of a teaser poster) that was prepared before the director removal and subsequent delay that happened to be released just now. It would be uncharacteristic of Pixar to release something this early for a film that they know won't be out for a while. Heck, I'm not expecting an Inside Out teaser poster until mid-2014 at the earliest! The delay was announced when physical production was beginning on the film, so I would assume that some designs were finalized. But I'm certain this is no different from those "leaked" Frozen posters. Some of my Pixarian friends think so as well...

What do you think?
