Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Supper

Guess who’s going back to Disney in just FIVE short days?!?!?  That’s right!!!  And we kicked off the fun with a Not So Scary Halloween Supper!!

HalloweenSupper

I set the table with all things orange and black and spooky this Halloween season.  I had all of the fabric remnants, napkins and serving pieces in my stash so it came together pretty easily.

The Not So Scary supper menu had a Mexican theme.  Why, you ask?  I have NO idea!  I think it must have been the orange and black tortilla chips that I picked up at Target.  One thing just led to another and before I knew it I was procuring orange tortillas and dreaming up Disney villain inspired names for the fare.  The cute little jack o lantern faces are reusable clings that came in a pack at Target.  I just stuck them on my trusty old Starbucks bottles and cut out some mouse ears to finish them off.

October Animation Tidbits

Tidbits, tidbits...

We got our first official trailer for Rio 2, after two teasers...

Cute. Colorful. That's about it, really. No doubt the family audiences will eat it up next April, and the plot at least isn't a rehash of the original. I'm just on the fence about this one. Also, what's with Blue Sky's recent iPod product placement?

But oh well, Nigel is still funny.

~

Evan Goldberg dropped some more details on Sausage Party, his upcoming R-rated animated collaboration with Seth Rogen...

First off, he says it's an "existential mock-Pixar movie".

"... We are very, very proud of it. It's our opus. It's like Mr. Holland's Opus! It’s our take on a Pixar movie. It is very, very R rated."

It's all in good fun, though, as he also said, "I wish there were fifty Pixar movies every year. But listen, someone should take those motherf*ckers down a notch. Those high and mighty bastards. We're mocking all animated movies, with a special eye on Pixar."

A mockery of the current American animated feature landscape sounds ideal for an R-rated animated film, but here's hoping that the film is a fun send-up and will also be really funny regardless of any lowbrow or juvenile humor. This will be what Shrek almost was, a great parody of what's big in animation right now.

~

Also, Frozen images... Boy do they look stunning!

Elsa's kingdom... With a Mike Giaimo sky! He's the art director of this film, and he was originally going to direct it back when it was actually called The Snow Queen. It's much like Pocahontas' color scheme, which gravitated towards heavy blues, lavenders and purples.

This one is just stunning... It's my favorite of the bunch. The pointedness of everything combined with the icy atmosphere. It just perfectly sums up Elsa's character.

These images alone make me anticipate this film even more now, not some poorly-edited slapdash trailer that assumes that audiences can't sit through two quiet minutes of anything animated. Of course, we know that Disney marketing won't make Frozen look like a grand must-see event spectacle, instead opting to bombard you with jokes, silly snowmen and one-liners. Like I said in my post regarding spoilers in Pixar trailers, I'll just stick to images and the teasers for these films and quite frankly... I'm fine with that.

Where did these images come from? Disney Russia's Facebook page... Why not Disney's other pages for different countries? If they don't come the other pages (American, European, etc.), I'll only shake my head in disbelief. At this point, I believe Disney's ever-so-wise marketing department would do that.

What's your take on the new Rio 2 trailer? What do you think of the Frozen images? What do you think of Sausage Party and the writers' plans to mock Pixar films?

Cat Chow {River Cats Baseball Snack}

I was snack mom last week for our (too) late seven thirty p.m. game and figured the parents would be beating a path to the exit just as soon as the last second ran off the clock.  To this end, I put together bags of “Cat Chow” for our River Cats so that they could just grab and go should they be so inclined.

With the game wrapping up at nearly nine, the last thing I wanted to do was load them up with too much junk so I included a red apple, pack of pringles and cheese stick in the bag.

This is what a gaggle of seven year olds look like when out way past their bedtimes... a picture certainly is worth a thousand words.

Halloween Chalkboard Art Tutorial

So, kinda like the chalk paint craze, I am pretty tardy to the chalkboard art party.  Last year when I decked out the porch for Halloween, my fish painting bothered me in the background – taunting me with is springy-ness and reminder of summers past.  When Honey said he had a great board for it hiding downstairs, I jumped at the chance to get ‘er done.

October 2013 019 copy

Now, while I do have a little creativity in me, I will be the first to admit that I am no artist.  So, the thought of trying to fill this blank canvas with something lovely was a bit terrifying.  With a quick stint on Pinterest, I not only found a chalk worthy quote, but I was also able to locate this great tutorial by Burlap and Denim.  I’ll let you hop on over there for all the details, but here’s a quick run through of the process…

1. First things first, you need a picture to work from, if you’re like me.  And I’m assuming you are else you’d be free-handing something fabulous rather than sitting here reading my step by step.  I created mine in powerpoint.  First I drew a rectangle to the scale of my chalkboard and then I settled on my fonts, spacing and images.  I added the grid lines to equal every 6” on my chalkboard.

2. In addition to the to-scale printout of your art, you’ll need a yard stick (or ruler depending on the size of your board) and a wet rag or some baby wipes.  (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I can’t imagine a day without baby wipes in it.  Baby or no.)

October 2013 002

3.  Use your yardstick to mark off the same 6” grid on your chalkboard.  Then, use your picture as a guide to draw square by square.  It’s a little tedious but I found it strangely fun and exciting to see it come together.  (This coming from the non-artist.)

October 2013 001

4.  As I finished each square, I used a baby wipe to erase my guidelines.  For the tiny little spaces, I wrapped it around my pointer finger and just dapped away.  You can always add back chalk if you erase too much.

5. After I got everything complete and erased from my guide image, I went back and freehanded some swirls to fill in some of the empty space.  I like it so much, I might leave it up until the new year with a new quote for Christmas!!
