I Love {Moulthrop Studios} + A Winner

Okay, so the first title I put on this post was I Love {Matt Moulthrop}.  But seeing as he’s the husband to bestie blonde Amanda, that seemed just plain weird.

Anyhoo… our dear and quirky friend Matt is a third generation wood turner.  He hails from a legacy of immensely talented Atlanta artists (his grandfather is recognized as the father of modern wood turning), and Moulthrop pieces can be found in renowned galleries, museums and private collections all over the world. Last year, Matt’s turned-wood vessels joined those of his father and grandfather in the permanent art collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

Even the family’s coffee table book is gorgeous - Moulthrop - A Legacy in Wood.  Matt gave us a signed copy after helping him out in a pinch with his Smithsonian photo shoot.

This guy is so humble, that when we were first forging a friendship, he said that he “worked with wood for a living”.  Honey and I love to support our friends, so I immediately launch into a monologue about how he should “totally get a table at the Jonquil Festival in Smyrna” to peddle his wares.  He graciously smiled and thanked me for the suggestion.  Fast forward about six months and he invited us to a gallery showing in Buckhead (which I was beyond excited about.)  On the way there, Honey and I had a very serious conversation about how we should purchase at least something small to show our support for Matt and decided that $50 would be our max.  bwahahahahaha.  If only I’d had the foresight to Google him.  These guys are masters of their trade and their work is simply stunning.  I mean, I was hanging with blonde Amanda one day when the lead singer of a very well known band called to inquire about the next piece for his collection.  Oh, and another day the prince of some small country called.  Helloooooo…. I’m lucky if I get one call per day that isn’t trying to cut down my trees or consolidate the debt of various people that I've never in my life heard of and certainly don't reside at my number.

I can hardly believe that it’s July and I never shared what Honey got me for Christmas last year… my very own, very beautiful, very special Matt Moulthrop bowl.  When we lost the big oak original to our property last year, Honey commissioned the vessel.

Matt has been quoted as saying “each tree has a story to tell.”  My bowl tells the story of a well loved home, a young family making it their own, and a dear, dear friend that put his heart into the piece.  And I just adore that.

Derby Day

It’s been raining cats and dogs here in Georgia for the last two days.  And, after being cooped up inside all day long, we couldn’t wait to don our derby finery and head to the S house for a fabulous Run for the Roses soiree.

Some of the gals…the (little) boys were in the hot tub and swimming pool.  In the sub-60 degree rainy weather.  That gorgey painting is another by Mary Pratt.

Ash had an enviable and so-Southern derby spread.  Ham biscuits, pimento cheese, cucumber sammies, shrimp, bourbon soaked brownies topped with bourbon soaked raspberries (o.m.g.), brownie cake pops for the littles and the requisite mint juleps!

Fingers crossed she makes this an annual tradition - it was more Derby fun than we've had in a good long while!

I could hardly let the topic of the derby go without raving about another fantastic artist.  Tim and his wife Nicole live in San Fran but hail from Texas and Tennessee respectively.  They originally started these illustrations to fancy up their horse betting, hat wearing, fan yelling annual Derby Party, but now share them with other horse lovers and Southerners through a site called Society 6 and on Pinterest.  How cute are these??!!!

And they are very affordable to boot!

With that, I’m off to do a little rain dance.  We’ve got outdoor plans that I’d hate to see spoiled!

Savannah: Byrd’s Cookie Bar + Catherine Lovett

The baby has been a little under the weather the last day or so, but was back to himself by the end of the day.  Some of my parent’s oldest friend’s lost their mother so we delivered a meal and visited with them for a little while before heading to a late lunch at Byrd’s Cookie Bar & Grill.  It was totally delish, as usual, and since it was so late in the day we nearly had the place to ourselves!  I’ve had the Autumn Salad (arugula, blue cheese, hazelnuts, apples and apple cider vinaigrette) as my entree the last few times we dined at Byrd’s and can’t get enough of it.  We learned today that they have a new chef starting this month and will greatly expand the menu.  Can’t wait to go back in April!!

We popped in the Lilly store and ran a few other quick errands before stopping by Catherine Lovett’s to pick up the piece de resistance for the PCP’s impending room update.  I love love love it!  This iphone pic hardly does the painting justice – you can barely see the gorgeous gold leafing and little dabs of sea salt.  It’s stunning!!

Oh, and I simply adored Catherine too. While I feel like I’ve known her for ages, this was the first time we actually met in person.  I’m pretty sure we’d be besties if I lived here year round (and I say that in a totally normal non-stalkerish way.)  Her house was DARLING – I wish I’d thought to ask her if I could house crash it for the old blog!!  She also made this sweet Wassaw Conch for my bookcases.

I’m off to bed – I’m reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton and can hardly put it down.  If I didn’t know better I’d think Downton Abbey came straight from its pages.  Thanks to all that recommended it!

The Boy’s Bath {Before & After}

As always, I want to kick off the reveal with a reminder of the before.  This is where we started on move in day.  I’d never in my life laid eye on a tri-fold shower door or a tri-fold mirrored medicine cabinet until I became the proud owner of such lovely items.  All jokes aside, I was very appreciative of the updated counter, sink and faucets and was pleased that the “vintage” honeycomb tile was white and in good repair.

So before we moved in, we removed the medicine cabinet and shower door contraption, gave it a good scrubbing and painted the walls and vanity.  We had all of the Pottery Barn Alphabet Soup decor from our old house and just made it work in the new space.  See more of the Baby’s Bath here.

So now the teeniest space in the house has seen another update!  With all the basics done, this before and after was really just about changing the decor.

Sources:
  • Paint – Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray (walls) and Alabaster (vanity and trim)
  • Mirror – Target (It was originally black but for this update I painted it in Annie Sloan’s Old White chalk paint with a clear glaze.)
  • Light – Pullman Bath Light from Shades of Light
  • Shower curtain – Target
  • Rug – Target
  • Towel bars & curtain rod – Home Depot
  • Nate Berkus Tortoise Shell
  • The Line Print from Old Try

I originally purchased the Nate Berkus tortoise shell for the baby’s big boy room but ran out of wall space.  I’ve had the towels at least since the baby was born!  They were from Love Street in Smyrna and feature burlap appliques of the littles’ first initials.

Y’all know I have a slight obsession with Old Try’s line of letterpressed prints.  This particular one is called The Line and was also originally purchased for the big boy room.  It is framed in an Ikea frame with a piece of art paper behind it since it didn’t fit exactly in the mat.

The shower curtain is from Target and was a real production, as things tend to be around here :-)  I wanted to keep the height on the curtain since it makes the ceilings look so tall so I ended up buying two shower curtains and begging Mother to cutting the three ruffled bands off the bottom of the second and sewing them on to make the first the right height.  I have a second lower rod back there that holds the plastic liner.  The rug is also from Target, but I’ve had it for about a year now.  I originally purchased it for the mud room and then I lost it so I purchased a new identical one and then I found it.  Follow that?

I think this rendition of the boy’s bath should last a good long while!!

I Love {Mary Pratt}

I’m back today with another of my favorite local artists – Mary Pratt of Pink Chair Studio.  Mary is mother to my dear friend Anna, grandma to two of the most darling little girls you could ever hope to know AND a stunning artist.  I’ve had the great pleasure of getting to know her over the last few years and always look forward to seeing her at Anna’s parties, gatherings and events.  This is the piece that started an instant and all-encompassing love affair with Mary…

…can you even believe the gorgeousness?  I literally swooned right there in Anna’s kitchen.

This portrait of a family friend’s daughter is equally as marvelous.  I’ve seen this child in person and I can honestly say that this perfectly captures her!  I sure would love to have one of the boys (I’m putting that out there on the off chance Honey is reading.)

It should come as no surprise that I’m drawn to her coastal pieces.  Here are a few of my favorites…

Soooo…after admiring Mary’s work in Anna’s home and through her Facebook page for a good long while, I was absolutely positively thrilled when Honey told me I could work with her on a piece for our bedroom for my Christmas gift.  I loved the idea of a diptych after seeing the aforementioned peacock painting and wanted something coastal in my muted colors.  Imagine my absolute delight when she presented me with this…  (that would be the second time I swooned in Anna’s kitchen).  She used thick gallery wrapped canvases - the two 20x24” pieces make for a total size of 40x24”.

I truly couldn’t have dreamed up anything more perfect and I cannot wait for y’all to see what we’ve done with it!!!  One of my favorite Christmas gifts of all time!

Catherine Lovett’s Crab

While at Tybee Social on our last trip down to Savannah, I came across a pair of paintings by Catherine Lovett that stopped me dead in my tracks…

…this photo hardly does them justice because what you can’t see is her signature use of gold leafing.  I mean, I was literally head over heels in the matter of two point five seconds.  When I found out she was local to Savannah, I became crazy captivated and spent the balance of my evening pouring over her website and driving Mother and Sister batty by rambling on about how I MUST GET ONE OF THESE PAINTINGS!

After talking with her a few times (she’s a doll and I’m convinced we’d be bffs if I still lived down South), we laid out plans for a mixed media coastal crab on 24”x24” wrapped canvas for the baby’s big boy room.  Mother picked it up (and adored her as well) and brought it with her last week and it’s PERFECTION!!!   Fingers crossed the baby doesn’t think it’s as “scary” as the nursery’s balloon curtains.

Speaking of the baby’s big boy room, we’re making great progress!  I hope to skirt his two bedside tables and frame and hang stuff on the walls this weekend.  Now, excuse me while I go ogle Catherine’s crab…
