"Mr. Peabody & Sherman" - First Image

The first image for DreamWorks Animation's Mr. Peabody & Sherman has been revealed today. Opening on March 14, 2014, the film is based on the segments from The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. It's being directed by The Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff.

We haven't heard much about this production, aside from the change of actors for the voice of Mr. Peabody. Originally, Robert Downey, Jr. was approached to provide the voice of the character. That would've been perfect, actually. I can see Downey Jr. as Mr. Peabody. Oh well, he's probably going to be very busy with Iron Man 3 and the eventual Avengers sequel in the next couple of years. His replacement is Ty Burrell (National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Modern Family). This has happened with DreamWorks before. He was originally though to be the voice of Metro Man in Megamind, but that role went to Brad Pitt instead. Max Charles (young Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man) will provide the voice of Sherman.

As for the image, I'm not very fond of the character designs. But I've seen worse, and at least the characters aren't making the dreaded DreamWorks face. Maybe it's just me, but I never really could get behind the idea of computer animated versions of hand-drawn characters, especially ones that were done in cheap limited animation back in the 1950s and 1960s. The image doesn't stir up much excitement for me.

However, the adventures they'll go on will probably make for an exciting film. I just hope they don't go the "hip" route with this and make it like the Alvin and the Chipmunks or The Smurfs. The simple, somewhat educational cartoons are now blown up into a big plot where Sherman accidentally changes historical events and creates all kinds of problems traveling through time in the WABAC machine without Mr. Peabody's permission. It's up to the two of them to undo this mess. Sounds pretty good so far. DreamWorks has a fun film on their hands with this one.

Anyways, are you looking forward to this film? What do you think of the character designs in this image? Sound off!
